According to the article of digital newspaper “Diario del Puerto.com” (attached), Barcelona will become from September 2011 a harbour even safer because the Port together with the Customs will begin to implement the initiative Megaports to detect the traffic of the nuclear and radioactive materials.
The required equipment has already been installed in the container terminals for the measurement of the radiation in the goods.
The Megaports initiative is a project that develops an agreement signed in December 2004 between the Spanish department of Customs and the Department of Energy of the United States Government, under the National Nuclear Security Administration U.S. (NNSA).
According to the Barcelona Port Authority (APB) "is a very important activity for the Port of Barcelona, as it implies the recognition as a safe harbor by the United States."
The Megaports system is installed and working in the ports of Algeciras and Valencia that together with Barcelona hoard for more than 75% of port traffic in Spain.
